C_reactive protein (CRP), the best known member of this group, is present only at low concentration in blood of healthy individuals (&lt;5mg\/L), but is elevated up to 500 mg\/L in the acute-phase response, caused by inflammatory processes associated with bacterial infections, post-operative conditions or tissue damage.
